MAYBURGH HENGE, CUMBRIA
Nestling between the rivers Eamont and Lowther, Mayburgh Henge is a neolithic ditchless monument with the bank created by piling up thousands of river-smoothed cobbles. This bank ranges from 8' to 16' in height and the henge's diameter is approximately 340'. One standing stone survives at Mayburgh, rising 9' high, and it is thought that three others which created a 'four poster' within were blown up in the early C18th. There is a vague record of a bronze axe being dug up in the area around this time too, whilst late C19th excavations unearthed a stone axe buried at the entrance. It is also suggested that four more megaliths once flanked this entrance, which faces east and towards another henge, known as King Arthur's Round Table, 350 yards away.
