The first time that I visited this site, on the (then) hottest recorded day in Britain, I managed to head off in the wrong direction for half an hour or so before realising. I hadn't done much trekking for a while and it took a lot of ice creams to recover. The area is strewn with cairns and the odd unexpected remnants of some long forgotten buildings loom out of the fern and heather en route. The image The Darkest Light appeared on the exhibition posters for Sanctauries of Stone 2, at South Square Gallery in 2006.

12 APOSTLES OF ILKLEY MOOR, W.YORKSHIRE
Better known in the C19th as the Druidical Dial and formerly a group of around 20 stones, technically the 12 Apostles are located on the east of Rombald’s Moor. The circle is embanked and around 50’ in diameter, made from millstone grit, with none of the remaining stones being over 4’ tall. A burial was found within the central kist. This circle forms a triangle with the nearby Backstones and Grubstones. The 12 Apostles apparently has a history of witnessed light phenomena and has been frequently vandalised, the latter being the most peculiar since it's such a trek to get to.
OS: SE.126.451 On the moors between Ilkley & Burley-in-Wharfedale. Take the south east road from Ilkley to the Cow & Calf rocks and follow a path south west for a mile or so. Around 30 minutes walk, initially up hill.
