GLASSONBY

GLASSONBY, CUMBRIA
A subtly derelict cairn circle sited a mile east from Long Meg. More often than not the site is buried beneath scrub on private farmland; the decrepit fencing & rusty wire do not easily allow sneaky access. Excavated in 1900, finds included a blue bead, an empty cist & 2 cremations, one beneath a bronze age urn. The 'circle' is actually slightly oval and 29 stones remain delineating its circumference. Like Little Meg & Long Meg nearby, Glassonby has stones with carvings: 6 stones running east to south-east have concentric circles and other markings, although they are nigh on impossible to make out these days.
OS: NY.573.393 As you enter Glassonby from the west, first passing the ancient site of Long Meg then the unsigned site of Little Meg, take the road north to Kirkoswald. Not far along, a path leads to the right between fields & the circle is about half a mile down in the field to your left by some trees.
