DEVIL'S
ARROWS, N.YORKSHIRE
West of the village of Boroughbridge and south of the
River Ure, The Devil's Arrows are 3 massive millstone
grit megaliths forming part of the neolithic landscape
between the Ure and the River Swale, which also includes
henges at Hutton Moor and Thornborough. Probably quarried
several miles away near Knaresborough to avoid
transporting across river, these giant stones ranging
from 18' to 22' in height are naturally weathered and
striated and are on a north/south alignment. C16th
antiquaries noted 5 stones and it is known that one of
these was later used in the construction of a nearby
bridge. Legend says that the devil threw them in an
attempt to destroy the town, missed and left them there
embedded in the fields. Interesting legend and naming of
the site when you consider the Ordnance Survey map ref...
OS: SE.391.666 Between Boroughbridge and the A168
parallel to the A1(M). One stone is to the right of the
road leading to the village, whilst two are in the field
on the other side of the road.
