APOSTLES OF HOLYWOOD, DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY
The largest stone circle in Scotland, the 12 Apostles are
an ellipse measuring around 250’ by 270’. Only
5 are still upright and there are actually 11 stones in
the circle, only 4 of which are local - the rest quarried
from 2 miles away. A large number of stone axes from the
Lake District have been found in the vicinity of this
site. There are 2 stories as to why there are only 11
stones: 1) the Ordnance Memoirs, quoting a letter in
1850, noted that a bluespot on a drawn plan was
accidentally reproduced, or 2) local tales mention that a
farmer removed one stone to give access to his plough.
When confronted he claimed it represented Judas anyway.

Scotland.
